Softball Advances to GHSA Final Four

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The FPD softball team (22-9) kept its state championship hopes alive on Friday, winning both of its elimination games against Darlington (8-0) and Strong Rock (4-0) to advance to the GHSA Class-A Final Four on Saturday morning vs. Savannah Christian.

Forced to play later than expected due to heavy rain, the Lady Vikings avoided elimination with stellar pitching and timely offense.

“We did a really good job as a team,” freshman Maggie Renfroe said. “Everyone worked together to hit the ball and (Carli) was great on the mound.”

Renfroe was the catalyst in FPD’s win over Strong Rock, driving in one run on two hits as the Lady Viking outhit Strong Rock 7-5.

“We are really excited to get to the Final Four,” Renfroe said. “It’s an awesome experience.”

Carli Sutton (19-7) picked up two wins for FPD, striking out 14 batters and scattering 11 hits.

FPD’s first victory on Friday over Darlington was a welcome sight after the Lady Tigers knocked the Lady Vikings out of the state playoffs a year ago.

“That was a big game,” Renfroe said. “Both teams were really loud and we were able to pull through with the win.”

Emily Rutledge and Mary Micah Lee paced FPD’s offense against Darlington, each accounting for two RBI’s, while Renfroe was 3-for-4, respectively.

First pitch against Savannah Christian is set for 9 a.m. on Saturday morning.

“We have to stay focused,” Renfroe said. “It’s a great thing to make it this far, but we have to put it behind us and focus on what’s ahead.”
