Girls Basketball Wins Third Straight, Down Hancock in OT

MACON, Ga. – The FPD girls basketball team (9-6, 3-1 Reg. 7) picked up its third straight win on Tuesday night, January 21, a thrilling 42-41 overtime victory over the Hancock Central Lady Bulldogs (2-12, 1-3 Reg. 7) at the Middlebrooks Athletic Center.

Down 35-33 with 2.6 second remaining, FPD sophomore Sydney Reese stole the ball away from Hancock and knocked in a lay-up to send the game into overtime.

In extra minutes, the Lady Vikings outscored the Lady Bulldogs 7-6 to hang on for the win, but it didn’t come easy.

Up 42-40 with one second remaining, the Lady Vikings fouled Hancock’s Qytia Williams on a three-point shot, putting her at the line with a chance to win the game.

Williams missed the first of three free throw attempts, drained the second and back-ironed the third, giving FPD the win and sending the Lady Vikings into a celebration on the floor.

Senior Savannah Phillips notched 18 points to pace the Lady Vikings. Williams finished with 19 points and Jemsha Nolley tacked on 12 for Hancock Central, respectively.

Reese also picked up five steals in the winning bid for FPD, all coming in the second period.

The Lady Vikings will look to push their winning streak to four on Friday night, Jan. 24, traveling to play Twiggs County in a region-7 game.

Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Jeffersonville.
