GREENVILLE, S.C. — Furman’s Grace Tinkey has been named the Southern Conference’s Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week for meets occurring last weekend, as announced today by the league office. The selections are made by the league’s track and field coaches.

Tinkey, a freshman from Macon, Ga., broke the Emory Crossplex Invitational meet record in the 5,000m run by more than 40 seconds, taking the top spot after recording a time of 17:02.99. Her time currently leads the conference by 20 seconds and is the top time among freshmen on the national list.

“I was very pleased with Grace’s race and how it reflects on her fitness level this early in the season,” said Furman coach Rita Gary. “She has big goals for this track season, and I’m excited to help her reach them. Her next big test will be on Feb. 15 when she travels with fellow freshman Allie Buchalski to Boulder, Colo., to race at the USA Junior Cross Country Championships.”

Tinkey will compete with the Furman track and field team Friday, Jan. 31, at the Bob Pollock Invitational at Clemson.
