Wrestling Finishes Strong at Area Traditionals

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. – The FPD wrestling team was in action on Saturday at the GHSA Area Traditionals hosted by Landmark Christian School with several Vikings earning a spot in the top-four in their respective weight class to advance to the State Sectionals.

Highlighting the list was senior Martin Wilson, who took first place in the 220 pound weight class.

“It was a good day for us in area competition,” head coach Ken Garvin said. “We are all proud of the guys and those that move on to sectionals next week will be ready to face even tougher competition.”

Wilson wasn’t the only Viking that saw success on the day. Junior Liam Bassett took runner-up honors in the 120 weight class while sophomore Allen Leach finished as the runner-up in the 195 weight division.

“Our underclassmen have experienced the grind,” Garvin said. “We know it will get tougher the further we advance.”

Freshman Alan Carlton, Hugh Moody, Denson Martin and Evan Sapp took fourth in their respective weight classes, also earning a trip to sectionals February 7-8 at The Darlington School in Rome.

“Fundamental wrestling will move us along,” Garvin said. “It’s a tough road ahead, especially for our younger guys, but it’s crucial for their development.”
