Baseball Claims Region Title Over Aquinas

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Head coach Jim Turner has been at the helm for nine baseball region titles at FPD.

But none may be sweeter than what happened on Friday night, April 25 for the skipper who plans to step down as head baseball coach at the end of this season.

FPD (16-6, 11-1 Reg. 7) defeated Aquinas 13-3 en route to claiming the 2014 Region-7 Championship and the thirteenth baseball region title in school history, the last two coming as a member of the GHSA.

“It was a special night for all of our kids,” Turner said. “It’s something we will never forget. We had so many player make big plays for us.”

FPD’s offense was the big player in the contest, scoring at least one run in six of the seven innings played.

“Our offense was patient tonight and we got key hits in great situations,” Turner said.

Providing plenty of power was FPD’s K.J. Spears and Austin Cox. Both players accounted for a three-run home run at different points in the contest.

FPD outhit Aquinas 14-7 and committed one error to Aquinas’ five.

Cox took the win on the hill for FPD, who automatically advance to the GHSA Class-A State Playoffs as the top seed from Region-7.

“We got everything we needed in this one,” Turner said. “Great pitching, key hits and solid defense.”

The playoffs begin on May 2. Opponent and game times will be determined at a later date. Check in the near future.
