Girls Soccer Claims Region Title Over Brookstone

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The scene is a familiar one.

At least if you follow the FPD girls soccer team.

The Lady Vikings (15-0) picked up their fourth straight region title on Thursday night, a 5-0 shutout over the Brookstone Lady Cougars.

“Our girls put together a dominant performance,” head coach Josh Trieste said. “We played well from start to finish and controlled the play the entire night.”

Katey Griggs netted FPD’s first goal of the evening on a penalty kick and Emma Lako and Sara Robertson added scores to give the Viking a commanding 3-0 advantage at halftime.

In the second period, the Lady Vikings pushed their offensive attack harder, scoring two more times off the foot of Brooke Battson and Kate Patterson.

It’s a welcome sign for Trieste.

“Our team is very balanced this year and tonight showed that with five different players scoring.”

Trieste also applauds the defensive effort the Lady Vikings have shown throughout the season. FPD has shutout 10 of its 15 opponents faced this year including a streak of three consecutive blankings.

“Our defense and keeper held a good team scoreless tonight,” Trieste said. “The girls are going to be a tough opponent for any team coming our way in the playoffs.”

FPD’s boys match, however, didn’t go according to plan, dropping a 2-1 decision to the Cougars.

Bradley Mullis provided FPD’s lone score off an assist from Cole Morton early in the second period, but the Vikings couldn’t tie the game, sending the region title to Brookstone.

“Our boys played a solid game tonight and we were so close to playing the game we wanted to play for 80 minutes,” Trieste said. “They battled until the final buzzer and played their best for the final 15 minutes.”

Trieste says the boys have a tough road ahead, but can build of last year’s deep semifinal run.

“Hopefully we can get another run together in the playoffs,” Trieste said.

The soccer teams return to the pitch on Saturday, April 19, hosting West Laurens in a doubleheader at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
