Boys Golf Fires 319, Advances to State Tournament

LOCUST GROVE, Ga. – Junior Brantley Wilson walked away from the Area Tournament on April 22 at Healy Point disgusted with himself. He fired an 82 (+10) and felt he cost his team a chance at an Area title.

Fast forward nearly two weeks later and Wilson righted the Vikings ship and more at the GHSA Sectional Match at Eagles Brooke Country Club.

On a day where pars were hard to come by and the birdies were few, Wilson fired a team-best 75 (+3) at Eagles Brook Country Club, aiding in a team score 319 and sending the Vikings to the state match on May 19.

“I felt really good out there,” Wilson said of his performance. “This was a course where you couldn’t get too aggressive and you had to rack up a lot of pars.”

The tie for second finish for FPD isn’t what head coach Matt Kitchell was looking for, but at the end of the day, he said it’s all about advancing.

“We wanted to come in here and win this thing,” Kitchell said. “But the main thing is that we advanced to fight another day.”

Senior Dalton Taylor signed his scorecard at 77 (+5) while Charles Stroud notched an 81 (+9).

“Our guys didn’t play their best today,” Kitchell said, “But I’m proud of them for grinding it out on this tough course.”

Wesley Hanson rounded the scoring for FPD with an 86.

Tee times for the state match will be announced by the GHSA at a later date with Forrest Hills Golf Club serving as the host course.
