Boys Soccer Bests Athens Academy, Advances to Round Two

MACON, Ga. – Bradley Mullis mentioned to FPD head coach Josh Trieste about an amazing shot made during warm-ups.

Trieste’s response: “I’d rather see you make one in the game.”

Mullis did that and more, scoring two goals as the Vikings (12-4-1) defeated the Athens Academy Spartans 4-2 in the first round of the GHSA Class-A State Playoffs. The win puts FPD in the second round with a matchup against Our Lady of Mercy on Tuesday night.

“He (Mullis) has the speed and he’s a dangerous player,” Trieste said. “Altogether, we are a team that can score at will on any given day.”

FPD jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a goal from Mullis and Kevin Griggs.

The Vikings were in control, but the Spartans had other thoughts.

In the final five minutes of the first period, Athens Academy netted two goals, the first from Mason Jones and the latter from Erik Norstedt to deadlock the match at 2-2 going into halftime.

“We made a couple of mental mistakes and they made some key goals,” Mullis said.

But Mullis and the Vikings came out with poise in the second period, scoring two goals, the first from Griggs on a penalty kick and the last from Mullis to send FPD to round two.

“It was exciting to be a part of,” Mullis said. “We had a lot of guys step up against a really good team.”

The Vikings held the shot advantage 9-8 over the Spartans. FPD keeper Matthew Feagin picked up eight saves while Spartan goalie Zander Mason notched four.

Trieste says the team will work tidying up the mental errors that led to Spartan goals.

“Our guys played hard,” Trieste. “We will get them ready for a tough Our Lady of Mercy team on Tuesday.”

Game time for Tuesday’s second round match will be released in the coming days.
