Elite Eight Bound: Girls Soccer Powers Past ELCA

MACON, Ga. – Josh Trieste told his Lady Vikings before the game that postseason soccer, no matter how it looks, is all about on word: winning.

FPD took that message and delivered with no problem, shutting out the Eagles Landing Christian Academy Lady Chargers 3-0 on Wednesday night, May 7 to advance to the Elite Eight of the GHSA Class-A State Playoffs.

The win sets up a match against Savannah Christian on Saturday with a time to be determined.

Trieste says it was apparent throughout the game who the dominant team was.

“We kept the possession it seemed around 90 to 95 percent of the time,” Trieste said. “We kept attacking their goal until the end and got some shots to fall throughout the course of the match.”

Netting FPD’s first goal was Jane Howell, who sent a header past ELCA keeper Parker Pinholster off a corner kick from Maisyn Samples at the 1:46 mark of the first period to give the Lady Vikings a 1-0 lead at halftime.

“Once we scored I think everyone kind of relaxed,” Howell said. “It gave us a sense of relief and confidence to start scoring more goals.”

FPD came out firing in the second period, scoring twice, the first on a Samples corner kick and the second when Kate Patterson assisted Brooke Battson.

Samples said she didn’t intend for her cross from the corner to go in, but she will take it.

“It was supposed to be a cross,” Samples said. “But it turned out nice because it went in the goal.”

The Vikings racked up nine corner kicks on the evening while holding ELCA to just one. Trieste says the number of corners is indicative of how the team is playing.

“The more corner kicks the better,” Trieste said. “We had quite a few (tonight) and we capitalized on them.”

The task becomes tougher now as FPD continues its postseason run. Howell says the team needs to keep it’s momentum moving forward.

“We just have to keep working hard at practice to get better,” Howell said.

Added Trieste: “The competition gets better the further we advance. But, we are looking forward to competing and continuing our run against some really good teams.”
