Softball Splits Season Opener with Rutland, Perry

MACON, Ga. – The FPD softball team split its season opening doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Rutland Lady Hurricanes 5-1 in its first game of the day before falling to the Perry Lady Panthers 10-9 in an offensive shootout in game two.

“I thought we played well,” head coach Jim Turner said. “We had great pitching in game one against Rutland and our offense was able to string together some hits in both games. We just fell one run short.”

In game one against the Lady ‘Canes, the Lady Vikings (1-1) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when senior Courtney Lawrence doubled home Peyton Worsham.

The Lady Vikings added another run in the bottom half of the fourth inning to increase its lead to 2-0.

After a Maggie Renfroe double, Jill Rogers reached on a throwing error for FPD. The miscue allowed Renfroe to score.

“We kept putting the ball in play all day…” Turner said. “Kept putting pressure on their defense.”

That strategy continued to pay off as FPD plated three more runs in the fifth to seal the win.

Sophomore Carli Sutton picked up the win in the circle for the Lady Vikings, scattering four hits, striking out six batters and allowing one unearned run. Mouse Somers took the loss for Rutland.

In game two against the Lady Panthers, FPD saw itself down in an early 1-0 hole after the first inning but rallied to take its only lead in the second, scoring two runs.

Sumner Carlton led off the inning with a triple and later came in to score on an Emily Rutledge single. Worsham would bring in Rutledge on a double for the second run of the inning.

The Lady Panthers pounced back in the third inning, scoring six runs, highlighted by a Mattie Hamilton 2-run home run to center field.

“That inning was the one that got away,” Turner said. “But thankfully the girls didn’t give up.”

The Lady Vikings nearly mounted an incredible comeback, outscoring the Lady Panthers 7-3 over the final four innings.

“We hit the ball, but so did they,” Turner said. “I think every time we’ve played Perry, someone has scored over 10 runs.”

Caroline Harrison, Emily Rutledge and Renfroe each had two RBI’s in the contest. Rutledge homered in the fourth, a solo shot over the center field fence.

Worsham picked up the loss in the circle for FPD while Kaley Sikes notched the win for Perry.

“We’ve got a few things to work on,” Turner said. “But in all it was a great start to the season.”

The Lady Vikings return to the diamond on Tuesday, August 12, hosting GMC Prep at 5:55 p.m. at the FPD Softball Complex.
