Volleyball Drops to Harris Co., Beats Strong Rock at Home

MACON, Ga. – Head volleyball coach Sarah Futo knew the final match of the evening against Strong Rock would be important heading into the long Labor Day weekend holiday, especially after her Lady Vikings (6-9) dropped their first match of the night to Harris County.

But FPD grouped together and rattled off a victory over the Strong Rock Lady Patriots in two games (25-12/25-20) to split its two matches on Thursday night at the Middlebrooks Athletic Center.

“It was important for us to get that one,” Futo said. “After our first match against Harris County, we had some time to rest and rethink some strategy. It paid off in the second match of the night.”

FPD took game one with ease 25-12 and held on for a 25-20 victory in game two.

Mikayla Mobley led FPD with three kills, while Mackenzie Johnson notched a dig and an ace against the Lady Patriots.

“Harris County was a strong team,” Johnson said. “And I think in the end we out-hustled Strong Rock.”

Futo says the win was in part due to better positioning and movement.

“We anticipated where the ball was going,” Futo said. “Harris County was a good team and they moved quick. We addressed that before our second match and it got better.”

Both Futo and Johnson think great things are ahead if the Lady Vikings continue to focus on getting better.

“We have to keep that energy and drive,” Futo said. “The hustle is there, we just have to keep it.”

In the first match of the night, the Lady Tigers won both contests by a score of 25-10. Mobley notched seven digs while Johnson picked up four digs and four aces.

The volleyball teams return to play on Thursday, Sept. 4, traveling to Northside High School for matches against the Lady Eagles and the Perry Lady Panthers. First serve is set for 5 p.m.
