Softball Swings Past Twiggs County on Senior Night

MACON, Ga. – Sophomore pitcher Carli Sutton threw a perfect game in game one and teamed up with senior Ashleigh Powers for a combined no-hitter in game two as the FPD softball team (19-7, 9-1 Region 7) defeated the Twiggs County Lady Cobras 16-0 and 15-0 in a double-header at the FPD Softball Complex on Thursday night, Sept. 25. It was also Senior Night for the Lady Vikings.

FPD honored its senior foursome – Powers, Katherine Strickland, Courtney Lawrence and Sumner Carlton – in between games.

“These were good wins for our team tonight,” head coach Jim Turner said. “It was great to send our seniors out on a high note like this.”

The Lady Vikings took game one 16-0 in three innings led by the five RBI’s of Lawrence, who hit an inside-the-park home run in the first inning. FPD scored 15 of it’s 16 runs in that frame to never look back.

Sutton finished the perfect game with five strikeouts and no walks in game one to improve her season record to 11-5 in the circle.

Powers and Emily Rutledge finished with two RBI’s each for the Lady Vikings as well in the first contest.

Game two of the night saw FPD jump out to another big lead, plating all 15 runs in the first inning and claiming a 15-0 win.

Powers (1-0) tossed two innings in relief and racked up four strikeouts while walking one batter.

“Our girls were excited to play today after Tuesday’s tough loss to Tattnall,” Turner said. “That’s always good to see as a coach.”

Five Lady Vikings picked up an RBI at the plate – Sutton, Rutledge, Lawrence, Jill Rogers and Lizzie Reed.

Altogether, the Lady Vikings outscored Twiggs 31-0 and out-hit the Lady Cobras 13-0 in the double-header.

FPD will now gear up for the GHSA Class-A Region-7 Tournament, set to begin in the first full week of October. The Lady Vikings locked up a guaranteed first round home game by finishing first in the sub-division earlier this season.

Specifics on opponent, date, and time will be determined in the coming week. Check www.fpdvikings.com, @FPDVikingSports and the FPD Athletics Facebook page for updates.
