Volleyball Ousted by Savannah Country Day in GHSA State Tournament Opening Round

MACON, Ga. – The 2014 season came to an end for the FPD volleyball team on Thursday night, falling 3-0 to the Savannah Country Day School Lady Hornets in a best three-of-five game series in the first round of the GHSA Class-A State Tournament at the Middlebrooks Athletic Center.

Savannah Country Day (25-18) will now take on the winner of the Lakeview/Fellowship Christian match in the Class-A Round of 12.

“It was a great season for our girls,” head coach Sarah Futo said. “They have nothing to be ashamed about. They fought hard all year long and ran in to a good (Savannah) Country Day team tonight.”

The Lady Vikings went down quickly in the match, dropping the first set 25-22. Kate Patterson finished with five kills and one ace in that contest.

FPD looked poised to respond and tie the series in the second set, posting a 5-1 lead early on.

But the Lady Hornets went on a 11-5 run to take the lead for good at 12-10 midway through the second set en route to claiming a commanding 2-0 lead in the series with a 25-19 win in the second set.

“We tip our caps to them,” Futo said. “They have a good team with some really strong and sound players.”

Forced to win three straight sets, the Lady Vikings couldn’t overcome the early hole, dropping the final set 25-16.

“We had our good moments in tonight’s game,” Futo said. “Hopefully our girls will work hard in the offseason and come back ready for an exciting 2015 year.”

Mackenzie Johnson and Patterson finished with two kills each in the second set. Abigail Pierce posted three aces in the third set and Mikayla Mobley finished the night with six digs overall.

The Lady Vikings graduate four seniors from the 2014 roster in Tesch Jerles (#4), Madison Busbee (#10), Alisha Napier (#13) and Mikayla Mobley (#14).

“I can’t say enough about what our seniors have done for our volleyball program not only this season but since it began back in 2012. They will be missed next year and I can’t thank them enough for their leadership efforts in 2014.”

FPD has advanced to the GHSA Class-A State Tournament three consecutive years dating back to 2012. The Lady Vikings have fallen each time in the opening round of play.

The 2014 season marked the first time in school history the volleyball program finished with a winning record (21-19). FPD’s final record in previous seasons was 10-19 in 2012 and 17-21-3 in 2013.

FPD’s overall program record through three seasons stands at 48-59-3.

The FPD Athletic Department sincerely thanks the senior volleyball players on a great season and wishes you God’s richest blessings in your future endeavors!
