Fourth Quarter Surge Sends Boys Basketball Past Schley 61-58

ELLAVILLE, Ga. – Champ Dawson scored 19 points and Maurice Gordon netted 18 as the FPD Vikings (2-1) came from behind for the second straight game defeating the Schley County Wildcats 61-58 on Tuesday night, Dec. 9 in non-region play.

The victory is the second straight for the Vikings, who also knocked off George Walton last Friday.

“Tonight was an absolute battle,” FPD head coach Michael Walton said. “Our guys to a point in the fourth quarter where they just decided that they wouldn’t lose. It was a total team effort against a very good Schley County team.”

Walton is referring to a fourth quarter that saw the Vikings score a whopping 29 points while holding Schley County to 17 to take the win.

But the high offensive numbers weren’t always a constant in the game. Both squads struggled offensively in the first half as the Wildcats went into the locker room at halftime leading 23-17.

“We knew going in that they (Schley) had two guys who could really shoot the ball and we let them get going a little bit,” Walton said. “But we chose to never give up and that’s one of the things I like about this team.”

Schley’s Nekevious Sims netted a game-high 21 points, including hitting five of the Wildcats’ seven 3-pointers on the night. FPD dropped in two from downtown from Jacob Oates.

FPD trailed 41-32 going into the fourth period, setting the stage for the major 29-point surge in the final eight minutes of play.

“When we had to make plays, we did,” Walton said. “We are very proud of our guys. It was a total team effort.”

FPD will now prepare for the GMC Prep Bulldogs on Friday night, Dec. 12 at the Middlebrooks Athletic Center.

The Bulldogs handed the Vikings two losses last year, the first a 61-36 downfall in Macon on Jan. 17 followed by a 52-46 loss in Milledgeville on Feb. 4.
