Slow Start Dooms Boys Hoops in 52-39 Loss to GMC Prep

MACON, Ga. – A nine point first half set the FPD boys basketball team behind the eight-ball and the Vikings could never recover, falling 52-39 to the GMC Prep Bulldogs (4-2) in non-region play on Friday night, Dec. 12 at the Middlebrooks Athletic Center.

The loss snaps a two-game winning streak for the Vikings (2-2).

“I thought we came out sluggish,” FPD head coach Michael Walton said. “We didn’t shoot it very well early and didn’t match the intensity that GMC brought. Hats off to them and Coach Lunsford.”

The Vikings trailed 27-9 at halftime, but attempted to chip away in the second half, cutting the Bulldog lead to 11 points twice.

But several turnovers and missed free throws sent FPD’s hopes spiraling. The Vikings finished at 8-for-16 at the free throw line while the Bulldogs were 3-for-6 from the charity stripe.

“We came out with a much better understanding in the second half of what we needed to do,” Walton said. “We just didn’t get it done when we had to.”

FPD’s Champ Dawson and Jacob Oates each scored 10 points in the loss. GMC was led in scoring by Luke Lawson’s game-high 13 points.

The Bulldogs spread the wealth on offense as well. Nine different players scored at least two points in the contest.

“They are a good team and are led by a good coach,” Walton said.

The Vikings will now prepare for the Savannah Country Day Tournament, set for Dec. 19-20. Opponents and game times will be announced in the coming days on

“We will get back to work and keep getting better at practice,” Walton said. “We have quite a few things to address and work on.”
