Walton, Vikings Pick Up First Win with 50-38 Rout of George Walton

MONROE, Ga. – Head coach Michael Walton picked up his first win as head coach of the Vikings on Friday night, Dec. 5 as FPD (1-1) came from behind to best the George Walton Academy Bulldogs (0-2) 50-38 at the Nicholson Center in non-region action.

The win snaps a short one-game losing skid by the Vikings.

“First off, hats off to Coach Lord at George Walton on a great game played,” Walton said. “But this was a great win for our kids tonight. They decided to grow up a little bit. We started slow and dug ourselves into a hole but they battled back and made the plays when we needed to.”

Maurice Gordon netted a game-high 15 points in the win while teammate Champ Dawson chipped in with 13 points to lead all Viking scorers.

It was FPD’s defense, however, that controlled the game and ultimately resulted in the victory.

The Vikings allowed the Bulldogs to score just four points in the fourth quarter. FPD took the lead for good at the 6:08 mark of the fourth frame as well.

“I was proud of their effort,” Walton said. “They showed a lot of heart battling back like they did.”

The game saw plenty of action from the charity stripe, with a combined total of 44 attempts. FPD finished at 16-for-31 from the line while George Walton was 16-for-23.

FPD trailed 13-4 at the end of the first quarter but went on a 14-10 run in the second quarter to go into halftime trailing 27-14.

After a trading baskets back and forth in the third quarter, the Viking defense clamped down on the Bulldogs in the fourth quarter while the offense surged. FPD outscored George Walton 22-4 in the final quarter and 10 of Gordon’s 15 points came in that same frame.

Chandler Gibson led the Bulldogs with 15 points.

The Vikings will now turn their attention to Schley County on Tuesday, Dec. 9 in Ellaville.

FPD took down the Wildcats 64-56 on Jan. 25 last season at the Middlebrooks Athletic Center.

“We’ll enjoy this win tonight for a little bit,” Walton said. “Then we will go back to work on Monday to prepare for Schley County.”

Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
