Boys Hoops Downed at Mt. de Sales 51-45

MACON, Ga. – Three Cavaliers scored in double-figures, proving enough for the Mt. de Sales Cavaliers (8-5, 2-1 GHSA Reg. 7A) defeated the visiting FPD Vikings (3-7, 0-3 Reg. 7A) at McAuley Hall on Friday nigh, Jan. 9 in Region-7 action.

Addison Barth and Garret Thomson netted 13 points each while Jordan Vaughn knocked in 10 points to lead the Cavaliers to their third consecutive victory while handing FPD it’s second straight loss.

“I thought we came out with the right idea, but we didn’t match their intensity and physicality,” FPD head coach Michael Walton said. “They have a very scrappy team. Coach (Jim)Massey does a good job with those guys.”

The Vikings lead 13-7 at the end of the first quarter but the Cavaliers outscored FPD 18-11 in the second quarter to take a 25-23 lead into the locker room at halftime.

But the Cavaliers kept the pressure on the Vikings. Mt. de Sales raced out on a 6-0 run to begin the third quarter, but FPD’s Jacob Oates, who finished with a game-high 15 points, responded with two made three pointers. FPD would trail 37-33 heading into the fourth quarter.

“They made their shots when they had to,” Walton said. “We had our chances but didn’t capitalize on them when they came.”

The Cavaliers pushed their lead to eight with just over five minutes to play in the fourth quarter at 43-35.

FPD attempted to make a valiant comeback, but shots in the final minutes from Vaughn and Barth sealed the victory.

“We have to get back to work and continue getting better,” Walton said. “I still like our team and what we’re doing. As long as we keep giving ourselves chances and keep getting better when we have those opportunities, that’s all I can ask for as a coach.”

FPD will have that opportunity on Tuesday night, Jan. 9, hosting the Tattnall Square Academy Trojans at the Middlebrooks Athletic Center at 7:30 p.m. in Region-7 play.
