Boys Hoops Downed at Stratford 63-44

MACON, Ga. – A 33-point second half surge led the Stratford Academy Eagles (13-5, 5-2 Reg. 7-A) past the FPD Vikings (3-11, 0-7 Reg. 7-A) 63-44 on Friday night, Jan. 23 in Region-7 action at the Grady Smith Gymnasium.

Stratford junior Quintez Cephus netted 26 points on the night while teammate O’Showen Williams dropped in 13.

“I thought we hung in there up until the fourth quarter,” FPD head coach Mike Walton said. “We just made some mistakes that you can’t afford against a good team like Stratford.”

FPD trailed 20-11 at the end of the first quarter and 30-23 at halftime.

“I told the guys at halftime that we were still in the game,” Walton said.

But the Eagles came out of the locker room on fire, outscoring the Vikings 15-8 in the third quarter.

“I thought Stratford came out with great intensity in the third quarter and caused us some problems,” Walton said. “In the end, we weren’t able to overcome the deficit.”

FPD was led in scoring from the 11 points of Jacob Oates. Champ Dawson and Maurice Gordon also poured in nine each.

The Eagles scored 19 points on 31 free throw attemps. FPD finished 12-of-17 from the charity stripe.

Stratford also held the advantage from behind the arc. The Eagles drained six 3-pointers, five coming from Cephus, while the Vikings pumped home four.

FPD will look to end its current six-game slide on Saturday afternoon, traveling to Columbus to take on the Brookstone Cougars.

Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Illges Gymnasium.
