Vikings Notch 58-50 Region Win Over Mt. de Sales

MACON, Ga. – FPD head coach Michael Walton thought his team didn’t give its best effort last out against Mt. de Sales Cavaliers in a 51-45 losing effort on Jan. 9.

But just over two week later, those thoughts are nearly gone.

The Vikings (5-11, 1-7 Reg. 7-A) picked up their first region win of the year, knocking off the Cavaliers 58-50 on Tuesday night, Jan. 27 at the Middlebrooks Athletic Center to even the season series at 1-1.

“I thought we came out with a lot of energy and enthusiasm to play,” said Walton, a former de Sales grad. “We stuck to our game plan and it paid off for us in the end.”

Part of that game plan was getting the ball to forward Maurice Gordon.

The freshman finished with a game-high 19 points to lead the Vikings to their second straight win.

“I thought Mo did an outstanding job for us tonight,” Walton said. “He was very active on the offensive and defensive end.”

Freshman Champ Dawson finished with 12 points as well for the Vikings while Titus Moore booked seven points.

“We had a lot of guys get involved for us tonight,” Walton said. “We need as much of that as we can. Guys like Titus, and C.J. Harris and Alex Giron gave us some quality minutes and made a big difference.”

The Cavaliers attempted to rally in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Vikings 18-9. But FPD had already built a sustainable lead to as many as 19 points earlier in the game to withstand the run.

“They are a good team,” Walton said. “And good teams make runs throughout a game. We knew they weren’t going to be quiet the whole game. But our guys did a good job holding on late to get the win.”

Addison Barth led the Cavalier attack on offense, scoring 16 points while teammate Darrius Wonnum punched in 11 points.

Both squads shot the ball well from long-range. Mt. de Sales finished with six made 3-pointers and the Vikings netted five makes from downtown.

FPD will now prepare for the Tattnall Square Academy Trojans on Friday night, Jan. 30.

The Trojans bested the Vikings 51-37 on Jan. 13 at FPD.

Tip-off for Friday’s contest is slated for 8 p.m. at Tattnall’s Athletic Center Gymnasium.
