Solid Pitching Helps Vikings Shutout Schley County 5-0

MACON, Ga.  – Senior Austin Cox tossed five innings of shutout ball and tallied six strikeouts as the FPD Vikings (2-0) defeated the Schley County Wildcats (1-1) 5-0 on Friday night, Feb. 20, at Ben Harden Memorial Field in non-region play.

“We got great pitching tonight from Austin and Gavin (Bloodworth),” FPD head coach Denny Bryant said. “They came out and were focused on their tasks at hand.”

Bloodworth added two innings of relief with four punch-outs as well for the Vikings, who picked up their second win in as many tries.

Cox helped his own cause in the bottom half of the fist inning by singling home Will McCormick to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Marshall Lyles singled in Garrison Hotchkiss and Gavin Bloodworth to give FPD a 3-0 advantage.

“We put the ball in play in that first inning and were able to bring some guys across,” Bryant said. “Our guys had some really good at-bats in that inning.”

FPD struck for two more runs in the fourth inning, the first coming on a Bo Fricks fielders choice that brought in Kendall Friar, and the second on a McCormick steal to home.

“Those two runs in the fourth really added some insurance for us,” Bryant said. “It was nice to manufacture those.”

Bryant is pleased with the overall team performance.

“It’s neat to see our guys contributing in different ways each night and in practice for one common goal of winning the game,” Bryant said. “That’s a sign of a good team and I hope that continues.”

FPD is back on the diamond quickly, hosting Southwest High School on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 3 p.m. at Ben Harden Memorial Field.

The game is a make-up date from Thursday’s cancellation due to the most recent arctic cold weather.
