Vikings Shutout West Laurens 5-0 in Day 2 of Viking Cup

MACON, Ga. – FPD head coach Josh Trieste wanted to see how his team responded after a 2-1 loss to Putnam County in the first day of the 2015 Viking Cup.

The head coach had plenty to be happy about. The Vikings (2-1) shutout the West Laurens Raiders 5-0 in convincing fashion on Thursday night, Feb. 19. FPD will now play in the 4 p.m. match on Saturday against the loser of the Fellowship Christian/Warner Robins match.

“I was proud of our guys for coming back like they did after last night’s performance,” Trieste said. “We all knew we didn’t play a good game, so for them to come out energized like they were was special.”

FPD netted three first half goals en route to the win, two coming within 15 seconds of each other late in the first period. Spencer Ennis nailed his first of two goals on a corner kick followed by a Cole Morton goal from a Kevin Griggs assist.

Later in the half, Robert Johnson one-touched a ball past the West Laurens keeper on an assist by Ennis to send the Vikings into intermission with a 3-0 advantage.

“It was nice to knock down those looks in the first half,” Trieste said. “That gave our guys a lot of confidence going into the locker room at halftime.”

The Vikings added two more scores in the second period, the first coming with 27 minutes remaining in the match from Ennis on a Morton pass. FPD’s last goal of the evening came from Griggs.

“I saw our guys really compete tonight,” Trieste said. “All of our guys contributed for us in this one.”

FPD keeper Wade Snow picked up three saves in the winning bid. FPD outshot West Laurens 17-3 on the night.
