Cox Slams the Door on Mount de Sales, 5-1

MACON, Ga. – When you’re on, you’re on.

And FPD’s Austin Cox was certainly on.

The southpaw tossed a complete-game one-hitter that included 12 strikeouts as his FPD Vikings (11-2, 5-2 Reg. 7-A) defeated the Mount de Sales Academy Cavaliers (9-4, 5-2 Reg. 7-A) 5-1 at Cavalier Fields on Tuesday night, March 24.

“To say this was a much needed win for us would be a big understatement,” FPD head coach Denny Bryant said. “They got us at our place earlier this season and it’s nice to come here and see our guys get the win.”

“Austin stepped up big for us tonight,” Bryant added. “His command was great and he threw strikes. He did a great job.”

Cox and the Vikings fell behind early in the game, though. The Cavaliers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Chandler Robinson lifted a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Ethan Edwards.

But in the top of the second, the Vikings snatched the lead back for good.

Kendall Friar reached on an error by the de Sales infield that scored Tyler Stubbs and Will McCormick to give the Vikings a 2-1 advantage.

“We just wanted to put the ball in play tonight and the more we did that, the more pressure we put on their defense to make the plays,” Bryant said. “Our guys stuck to the game plan and hustled all game.”

The game remained a pitchers duel between Cox and de Sales’ Adam Leverett until the top of the seventh.

The Vikings sent seven hitters to the plate and scored three key insurance runs to take a 5-1 lead.

The biggest blow from the Vikings in that frame came from Stubbs, who doubled home Gavin Bloodworth and Austin Hartley.

“That was a big hit by Tyler,” Bryant said. “That gave Austin and our guys some breathing room going into the bottom of the seventh.”

And Cox shined yet again in the bottom half for the Vikings on the hill. The final out, fittingly enough, was a strikeout swinging by Edwards.

“He threw an amazing game,” Bryant said. “We’ll definitely take that every time.”

The Vikings will now focus their attention on the Tattnall Square Academy Trojans on Thursday night, March 26.

The Trojans bested the Vikings 7-0 at Tattnall back on March 10.

First pitch for Thursday’s Region-7A contest is slated for 7 p.m. at Ben Harden Memorial Field.
