Cox, Stubbs No-Hit Rutland in 13-1 Victory

MACON, Ga. – One wouldn’t have to look far back in time to find the most recent FPD baseball no-hitter.

Pitcher Sam Jones accomplished that feat last week in a 9-0 win at Glascock County.

Now Austin Cox and Tyler Stubbs can join FPD’s no-hit club.

The duo teamed up to no-hit the Rutland Hurricanes in a 13-1 five-inning road win on Monday night, March 16.

The victory pushes FPD’s win streak to three straight.

“It was another special night,” FPD head coach Denny Bryant said, who saw his club improve to 9-2 on the year. “You look at the score and probably think that they (Rutland) had to get a hit, but that’s not the case.”

“Austin and Tyler were great tonight with their command. They located their pitches and trusted the defense behind them to get the outs.”

Offense certainly helps that cause as well.

The Viking bats came pounded out 14 hits, highlighted by the 2-for-3 performance of Bo Fricks, who totaled three RBI’s.

Stubbs also finished with two RBI’s.

“Anytime you can put the ball in play and keep putting pressure on the opposing defense, that’s a good thing,” Bryant said. “We got some pitches we could handle and our guys drove it really well tonight.”

Five Vikings finished with multi-hit games: Kendall Friar, Garrison Hotchkiss, Daniel Weaver, Fricks and Cox.

FPD also totaled five extra base-hits on the night.

But the story still remains the pitching and FPD’s back-to-back no-hit bids.

“We’ve had three different guys the last two games step up and really help us out on the mound,” Bryant said. “Let’s hope that continues moving forward.”

FPD will look to extend its winning streak to four on Tuesday, March 17, traveling to Irwinton, Ga. for a Region-7A contest at Wilkinson County High School.

The Vikings bested the Warriors 12-0 in six innings on Feb. 27 earlier this season.

FPD has totaled three no-hitters in 2015, the first dating back to Feb. 21 in a 10-0 victory over Southwest High School at Ben Harden Memorial Field in a combined no-hit effort from Jones and Kevin Moreau.
