Vikings Close Out Regular Season with 11-2 Win Over Mary Persons

FORSYTH, Ga. – The FPD varsity baseball team (17-4) scored nine runs over the final three innings on Thursday afternoon to defeat the Mary Persons Bulldogs (15-9) 11-2 in non-region play.

The win brings an end to the regular season for the Vikings, who will now await an at-large bid from the GHSA to Class-A Private State Tournament.

“To end the regular season with a win is always a good thing,” Bryant said. “We wanted to come back after a tough loss on Wednesday to Stratford and get some momentum back before we head into the state playoffs.”

FPD scored the first two runs of the contest in the third inning when Tyler Stubbs belted a two-run home run to center field.

But the Bulldogs responded to tie the game in the fourth inning. The first run came on a Viking infield error and the second on Bryson Jackson double.

“They came back and tied the game,” Bryant said. “We were a little rattled by that, but our guys responded the right way and went back to work at the plate.”

Went back to work the Vikings did.

FPD scored nine unanswered runs to claim the win.

In the fifth, Will McCormick put the Vikings ahead for good with a sacrifice bunt that plated Marshall Lyles.

Then an inning later, FPD scored four more times, highlighted by RBI singles from Austin Cox and Austin Hartley, to lead 7-2.

“It was great to see our guys come through like they did,” Bryant said. “We’ve really swung the bats good since coming back from Spring Break. We hope that continues into the state tournament.”

FPD closed out the game with four runs in the seventh. Hartley smashed an RBI single to score Garret West and Garrison Hotchkiss. Kendall Friar later doubled home Hartley.

Kevin Moreau (5-0) picked up the win for the Vikings. The southpaw tossed four innings, allowing one earned run and striking out four.
