Vikings Topple Southwest in Five Innings, 15-1

MACON, Ga. – The FPD varsity baseball team (12-3) returned from its spring break holiday with a bang, knocking off the Southwest High School Patriots 15-1 in five innings on Monday night, April 6.

“It was nice to come back from a break and get a road win,” FPD head coach Denny Bryant said. “We got out to an early lead and our pitching was solid all evening.”

The Vikings plated five runs in the first inning, highlighted by RBI singles from Bo Fricks and Austin Cox.

After the Patriots added a run in the second, FPD added five more runs in the third inning. Cox again provided an RBI single in the frame as the Vikings pushed their lead to 10-1.

“All of our guys set the table tonight offensively,” Bryant said. “Once we got out to comfortable lead, we were really relaxed the rest of the game.”

After adding a score in the fourth, FPD’s bats came alive again the fifth inning resulting in four more runs.

Kevin Moreau tripled home Tyler Stubbs. Jack Sawyer later singled home Moreau and Garrison Hotchkiss.

FPD rounded its offensive barrage when Sawyer scored on a Gavin Bloodworth single.

“The more confidence we have at the plate, the better we are as a team,” Bryant said. “We are getting down to the end of the regular season. Hopefully this is just a sign of things to come.”

Cox (6-1) picked up the win on the hill for the Vikings. The southpaw tossed two innings with five strikeouts and one walk.

“Austin got us off to a great start,” Bryant said. “We also had good performances from Gavin, Tyler and John Gordon.”

With tonight’s win over Southwest, the Vikings take the season series with the Patriots 2-0. FPD defeated Southwest 10-0 back on Feb. 21 at Ben Harden Memorial Field.

The Vikings return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 7, traveling to Strong Rock Christian.

First pitch is slated for 5:30 p.m. in Locust Grove.
