Boys Soccer Nets First Round Win Over Savannah Country Day, 1-0

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The no. 3 seeded FPD varsity boys soccer team (11-6-2) kept its postseason dreams alive on Friday afternoon, knocking off the no. 2 seeded Savannah Country Day Hornets 1-0 at Saunders Field in the first round of the GHSA Class-A State Soccer Tournament.

The Vikings move on to play at Athens Christian in the Sweet 16 on Wednesday, May 6 at a time to be determined.

“Our guys played very hard,” FPD head coach Josh Trieste said. “We were down two starters from the beginning and everyone stepped up. I’m proud of our team for their hard work and determination.”

Both squads battled to a 0-0 tie at intermission.

But late in the second period, senior Cole Morton found classmate Kevin Griggs for a goal with 13:30 to play in regulation.

“I told our guys just find a way to win and they did,” Trieste said. “It’s great to see our guys respond the way they did tonight.”

The Hornets, participants in last year’s Elite Eight, outshot the Vikings 17-9 on the night.

FPD keeper Dontrez Johson had a stellar outing in between the pipes, picking up 11 saves in the winning bid. Hornet goalie Michael Keene finished with two saves.

Check in the coming days for a confirmed time for Wednesday’s Sweet 16 match.
