Softball Claims First Region Win of 2015 by Downing Mt. de Sales 13-0

MACON, Ga. – The FPD varsity softball team scored 13 runs in five innings as the Lady Vikings (4-1, 1-0) rolled past the Mt. de Sales Lady Cavaliers (2-2, 0-1) 13-0 on Thursday night at Cavalier Fields to open GHSA Regio 7-A play.

FPD improves to 1-0 in region play while Mt. de Sales drops to 0-1.

“We got off to a great start tonight,” FPD head coach Jim Turner said. “We play in a tough region and to get that first region win under our belts is crucial. All of our girls came out focused and ready to play tonight.”

The Lady Vikings posted three runs in the first inning, the big hit coming off the bat of Jill Rogers, who singled home Emily Rutledge and Caylee Ann Sutton for a 2-0 lead.

After Rogers stole second, Karsen Ochs singled to score Rogers to make it a 3-0 contest.

“Getting ahead early was important, especially on the road,” Turner said. “That first inning gave us some much needed confidence the rest of the game.”

FPD scored twice again in the second inning, the last of the frame coming on a Rutledge groundout that plated Peyton Worsham.

The Lady Vikings put the game out of reach and brought the run-rule into effect in the fifth inning, scoring eight runs. Rogers added another RBI on a single that brought in Rutledge.

Sutton (2-0) picked up the win in the circle for FPD. The righty struck out eight batters and surrendered just one walk.

“She (Carli) was great,” Turner said. “She hit her spots and stuck to our game-plan all evening. Her offense provided her with plenty of runs and she was able to focus on pitching.”

FPD returns to the diamond quickly for a three-game weekend beginning August 20, taking on Northside at 5 p.m. and Bryan County at 8 p.m. in a tournament at Veterans High School.

On Saturday, August 21, FPD ends the tournament with a match-up against Peach County at 9 a.m. at Houston County High School.
