Softball Drops Duel at Veterans 2-1

KATHLEEN, Ga. – The FPD varsity softball team (2-1) saw its two-game winning streak snapped on Thursday night, falling to the Veterans Lady Warhawks (2-0) 2-1 in non-region play.

“It was a tough night for us,” FPD head coach Jim Turner said. “They have a really good pitcher and she limited our offense well. We got into some spots where we thought we had chances to score, but just couldn’t come through when we needed to.”

That pitcher Turner referring to is Avery Lamb. She finished the contest with nine strikeouts and held FPD’s offense to three hits.

Peyton Worsham (1-1) picked up the loss for the Vikings, tossing 3.1 innings and striking out four.

The Lady Warhawks struck for the first run of the game in the bottom half of the fourth inning when Jalah Gainous singled home Alexis Cortez for a 1-0 Veterans advantage.

An inning later, the Lady Warhawks added another score.

After two of what would be four fielding errors by the Lady Vikings, Lindsey Cauley reached on a fielders choice that plated Anna Dumas.

“We didn’t take care of business tonight with the ball on defense,” Turner said. “We will have to keep getting better as a team in that category.”

The Lady Vikings, who out-hit the Lady Warhawks 3-1, made things interesting in the seventh inning.

After Katie Culver reached on a fielders choice and two outs in the books, Karsen Ochs smashed a triple to make it a 2-1 game.

With the tying run just over 60 feet away, the Lady Vikings couldn’t overcome and struck out to end the game.

“This one hurts, but I hope that our girls learn from it and move on,” Turner said. “We played a really good team tonight and we have more good teams down the road we have to be prepared for.”

One of those teams is Warner Robins High School, who is next on FPD’s schedule.

The Lady Vikings travel to play the Lady Demons on Wednesday, August 19. First pitch is scheduled for 5:55 p.m.
