LAST TIME OUT FOR FPD: The Vikings dropped their 2015 season opener to the Howard High School Huskies 38-17 at Mercer University’s Five Star Stadium on Thursday, Aug. 27. The game was just the third time in Bibb County history that a public and private school football team played one another. FPD owns two of those games with a 1-1 record in those contests.

The Vikings trailed 14-10 at halftime against the Huskies, but couldn’t overcome a powerful second half surge as Howard outscored FPD 24-7 over the final two quarters.

Daniel Weaver and Armaun Smith picked up touchdowns in the loss while Brad Powell nailed a 28-yard field goal while going 2-for-2 on PAT’s.

LAST TIME OUT FOR MONTICELLO: The Hurricanes were shutout at Jackson High School 28-0 on Sept. 4, marking their second straight loss to start the 2015 campaign. Monticello also lost it’s season opener at home to Walnut Grove 20-15 on Aug. 28.

Dating back to last year’s playoff loss to Screven County, the Hurricanes are currently on a three-game losing streak.

SERIES HISTORY: Friday’s meeting between FPD and Monticello marks just the second time both teams have face each other and the Vikings hold a 1-0 advantage against the Hurricanes.

FPD took the series opener in 2014 back on Sept. 12 in a 9-6 GHSA-ruled weather-shortened contest at Austin Childers Field at George S. Johnson Stadium.

A recap of that game is available below in this edition of the Viking Fan Guide.

Soph. RB Armaun Smith: Impressed many in Viking Nation with his quickness and versatility while carrying and returning the football. Smith finished with 90 rushing yards on 10 carries that included a four-yard touchdown in the second half.

Sr. Daniel Weaver: Weaver appeared comfortable throughout FPD’s loss to Howard at the wideout position. He hauled in four receptions for 45 yards. One of those catches was a 14-yard touchdown from classmate and quarterback Will McCormick in the second quarter.

Sr. K Brad Powell: Was a perfect 2-for-2 on PAT’s in FPD’s opener v. Howard at Mercer. He also punched in a 28-yard field goal just before halftime for his first official make of the 2015 season. On kickoffs, Powell sent three into the end zone for touchbacks as well.

Safeties: The Viking safeties had a tough time guarding the quick wideouts of Howard, allowing Husky quarterback Courvosier King to through for 289 yards on the night, three of which were completed for 40-yard gains or more.

— Jr. Jay Johnson: Rushed for 40 yards in last year’s game against FPD.

— Sr. QB Thomas Deraney: Threw for just nine yards in last year’s contest against the Vikings.

— Hurricane Wideouts: Monticello has plenty of options at wideout: jr. Matthew Lawson, jr. Malcolm Smith, jr. Jakeir Stone, sr. Matthew Hollis and sr. Chad Gain.

First Power Ratings Released for 2015: The first edition of the GHSA Class-A Private Football Power Ratings were released on Tuesday Sept. 8.

43rd EDITION: The 2015 season marks the 43rd year of FPD Football. The Vikings have delivered countless memories since starting its program in the 1970’s. To date, FPD’s overall program record stands at 305-177-5

115 WINS and COUNTING: FPD head coach Greg Moore picked up his 100th win during the 2012 season with a victory at Hancock Central. Nearly two years later, the skipper has earned his 115th victory at the helm after a 31-7 win at GMC Prep on Nov. 7. Moore is the overall leader in program wins with 115, followed by Mark Farriba (77) and Bobby Brown (72).

WELL WORTH THE MOVE: Since joining the GHSA, the Vikings have enjoyed success on the local and statewide level. FPD has never had a losing season while in the league, posting an overall record of 32-23.

FPD’s best year in the GHSA was in 2011, finishing at 8-3 overall.

HOME COOKING: Since moving to the GHSA in 2010, the Vikings are 14-9 inside the friendly confines of George S. Johnson Memorial Stadium. FPD has won at least three games at home in each season but one (2011) since becoming a member of the league.

The Vikings finished 2014 with a home record of 4-1 with wins against Howard (Aug. 29), Monticello (Sept. 12), Mt. de Sales (Oct. 10) and Wilkinson County (Oct. 24).

ON DECK: The Vikings are back to work next week, opening the home portion of their schedule against the GMC Prep Bulldogs.

The Vikings defeated the Buldogs twice in 2014. The first time came on Sept. 19 in a 62-21 blowout win and the second was in the Region-7 crossover resulting in a 31-7 victory on Nov. 7.

Both games were played at historic Davenport Field in Milledgeville, Ga.

The last time FPD played GMC at home was in the 2012 season on Homecoming 2012 on Oct. 5. FPD won that contest 31-7.
