Volleyball Splits at Home with West Laurens and Harris County

MACON, Ga. – The FPD varsity volleyball team (13-8) split its two home matches on Thursday night, winning the first 2-0 (25-18/25-17) over the West Laurens High School Lady Raiders (6-8) before falling 0-2 (15-25/16-25) in the evening finale to the Harris County High School Lady Tigers (26-3) at the Middlebrooks Athletic Center.

“It was really a great all around night,” FPD head coach Sarah Futo said. “The girls really played well together.”

Senior Abigail Pierce, who returned from an injury in the offseason, totaled 11 kills in the match against the Lady Raiders and five more in the loss to the Lady Tigers to pace FPD’s attack.

“It’s really nice to have her back,” Futo said. “Anybody that can recover from ACL surgery in six months is impressive and she did great tonight.”

Futo says after the Labor Day holiday is when the intensity will pick up for the Lady Vikings.

“We start area play next week and we have been gearing up for that all season,” Futo said. “We’re really excited and ready. We’re in a rotation right now that is working well for us. I think we’re ready to put that to the test.”

Futo noted that her squad must remain consistent, though, especially as area play begins.

“We have to be consistent,” Futo said. “We can’t miss any serves. We did a good job of that tonight and we have to continue to rack up a bunch of kills.”

FPD returns to the court on Tuesday, Sept. 8, traveling to Randolph-Clay High School to begin Area-2 play.

First serve against Randolph is at 5 p.m. followed by a match with Greenville at 6 p.m.
