Mount de Sales Cavaliers Slide Past FPD Vikings Late 22-21

MACON, Ga. – What appeared to be a sure FPD football victory turned a complete 180-degree turn on Friday night as the Mount de Sales Cavaliers (2-4, 1-1 Reg. 7-A) came from behind to defeat the Vikings (2-4, 0-2 Reg. 7-A) 22-21 at Sister Elizabeth Lowman Field at Mike Garvin Stadium.

The loss marks FPD’s third straight and second in sub-region play.

“I’m sorry, but we just didn’t get the job done tonight,” FPD head football coach Greg Moore said. “I think the character of our young men will show as we get ready to play our next game.”

FPD started the scoring early and with ease.

After a 65-yard Reggie Gantt kickoff return, Armaun Smith punched in one of his two touchdowns with 10:20 to play in the first quarter and Brad Powell nailed the extra point to give FPD a 7-0 lead.

Less than four minutes later, the Cavaliers responded via the foot of Ryan Murphey. The junior hit a 37-yard field goal to make it a 7-3 contest.

But the Vikings responded well and with some trickery.

With 3:09 remaining in the first quarter, Daniel Weaver faked a punt and ran in a 70-yard touchdown. Powell tacked on the PAT and the Viking lead was at 14-3.

FPD struck once more, this time from Smith as the sophomore returned a 73-yard punt from Mount de Sales. Powell’s PAT was good and FPD led 21-3.

But once again, the Cavaliers swung back.

Adrian Hardwick scored on a 57-yard run with 5:38 to play in the first half and Murphey made the extra point. FPD would go into the locker room at the half with 21-10 lead.

“We felt good at halftime that we were executing some things that we had worked on,” Moore said, “But in the second half, we didn’t play fundamentally sound and it ended up costing us the game.”

The Cavaliers scored 12 points in the second half while keeping the Viking offense at-bay.

After both teams fought to a scoreless third quarter, the stage was set for the dramatics of the fourth frame.

Hardwick ran in a two-yard touchdown with 5:25 to play. The Cavalier attempted to go for the 2-point conversion but failed on a run attempt to make it a 21-16 FPD lead.

With the ball back in the FPD’s hands, the Mount de Sales defense forced a Viking punt.

The Cavaliers then drove down the field and scored on a 21-yard pass from Pinkney Gilchrist to Tres Hattaway. Another 2-point conversion failed, but the Cavaliers had the lead at 22-21.

After the kickoff and getting the ball back with limited time, FPD marched down the field to the Mount de Sales 32-yard line and attempted a field goal from 47 yards out.

But the kick dropped just short of the cross-bar and the Cavaliers held on for the win.

FPD will now shift its attention to the Tattnall Square Academy Trojans on Friday, Oct. 16 on Homecoming 2015.

The Trojans fell to Stratford Academy 41-14 on Friday night.

Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Austin Childers Field at George S. Johnson Stadium.
