Softball Blasts Lincoln County 23-2 in First Round of Region 7-A Tourney

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga.  – The FPD varsity softball team (19-5) rolled to a Region 7-A Tournament first round victory on Tuesday afternoon, knocking off the Lincoln County Lady Red Devils 23-2 in three innings.

The Lady Vikings will now play the GMC Prep Lady Bulldogs on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. in the Region 7-A Semifinals in Milledgeville. GMC Prep defeated Mount de Sales 15-0 on Tuesday evening.

“It was nice to score those runs and every starter had a hit,” FPD head coach Jim Turner said. “It was a game where they were young and we were able to take advantage of a lot of their youth.”

The Lady Vikings scored 16 runs in the first inning and added seven more in the second frame.

Carli Sutton picked up the win in the circle, tossing one inning. Peyton Worsham and Karsen Ochs also threw one inning each in the victory. Each pitcher recorded two strikeouts in the win.

At the plate, Ochs led the team with five RBI’s while Jill Rogers drove in the three runs. Allie Parkerson nailed a two-run home run as well.

“The team played really well and we hit the ball really great, especially with runners on,” Rogers said. “Karsen Ochs, Amanda (Evans) and Lizzie (Reed) all had really good hits.”

FPD will now focus on a much tougher task: making it back to Region 7-A Championship game for a second consecutive season. A win on Wednesday night over the Lady Bulldogs will secure that.

“Tomorrow we just need to to go into the game with a focused mindset,” Rogers said. “Getting runners on base, getting them over and getting them in will be crucial.”

“Our defense just needs to focus on one pitch at a time and execute every play,” Rogers added. “If we do that, we’ll be just fine.”

Turner knows the road gets tougher as well in the Region Tournament.

“GMC has a great team, a quality program and it will be tough,” Turner said. “We’ll need to be sharp, especially mentally and execute the fundamentals of the game.”
