Lady Vikings Run Past Carver Lady Panthers in Season Opener 56-38

MACON, Ga. – The FPD varsity girls basketball team (1-0) picked up a season-opening win on Monday afternoon at the Stratford Academy Girls Basketball Classic, defeating the 5-A Carver High School Lady Panthers (1-4) 56-38 at the Grady Smith Gymnasium.

“This was a great way to start our season, obviously,” FPD head coach John Griffin said. “We went to a lot of team camps over the summer and our girls got better by playing with each other at those camps. I think that showed tonight, especially in the first half.”

Indeed it did.

FPD jumped out to a 19-6 lead after the first quarter and lead 34-14 at halftime.

Emma Lako led the Lady Vikings with a career-high 20 points while Kate Patterson poured in a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds. Patterson also tacked on six assists on the day.

In the second period, the Lady Vikings held the Lady Panthers at bay despite being outscored 16-8 in the third quarter. That was mainly the doing of Jamia Brewer, who led all scorers with 22 points that included four 3-pointers. Three of those three’s came in the third frame.

“We played well in transition I thought,” Griffin said. “And Emma and Kate gave us a great effort. I thought we moved to our spots like we have been doing in practice and that’s great to see.”

FPD outscored Carer 14-8 in the fourth quarter to finish off the win.

Bailey Ruble finished with eight points and Sadie Frame added seven as well..

The Lady Vikings also cashed in at the foul line, finishing a solid 8-of-11 (.727) from the charity stripe.

“We did a lot of good things in this basketball game,” Griffin said. “I’m mainly just proud of our effort. We came out and hustled and played hard from start to finish. Everyone who played contributed in a positive way.”

Added Griffin: “All in all it was a good win to put us on the right track to begin the year.”

The Lady Vikings return to action after the Thanksgiving holidays, traveling to GMC Prep in Milledgeville, Ga. on Tuesday, Dec. 1.

Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Cordell Events Center.
