Boys Basketball Slides Past GMC Prep at Buzzer 45-43

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – With 43 seconds remaining after a GMC Prep (2-1) turnover, the FPD Vikings (1-0) marched down the floor via Champ Dawson who came off of a screen and found Maurice Gordon in the lane for a made layup with 7 seconds remaining for a 45-43 win at the Cordell Events Center on Tuesday night, Dec. 1 in FPD’s 2015-16 season opener.

“First you have to give credit to GMC,” FPD head boys coach Michael Walton said. “Those guys battle and play hard. But I’m really proud of our guys. It was a great team effort. Our kids really showed tonight that they’ve grown up a whole lot since last year. They earned it and prepared very well for it.”

Without a doubt, there was no shot bigger than Gordon’s. The sophomore finished with 10 points while Armaun Smith led the team with 11 points on the night.

The Vikings trailed 10-8 at the end of the first quarter but outscored the Bulldogs 18-10 in the second frame to take a 26-20 lead into the locker room at intermission.

But a troubling offensive third quarter plagued the Vikings. FPD was outscored by GMC Prep 11-3, resulting in a 31-29 deficit after 24 minutes of action.

“I told our guys that I wanted to see them compete and they did,” Walton said. “We definitely faced some ups and downs in the game. The third quarter we had trouble scoring. But we hung in there stuck to our game plan defensively and I think that’s what kept us in the ball game.”

In the fourth quarter, the Vikings outscored the Bulldogs 16-10 with Gordon’s final shot the game-winner.

Jacob Oates, Beck Muse and Henry Middlebrooks chipped in with five points each in the victory.

FPD made four 3-pointers while GMC Prep knocked in two from downtown.

GMC Prep’s Luke Lawson led all scorers with 17 points while teammate Alex Moss added 15.

“We knew we had to limit those two scorers and we did,” Walton said. “Hopefully that’s a good sign moving forward.”

FPD is back on the hardwood on Friday night, Dec. 4 for its home opener against another Bulldog team – George Walton Academy.

Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Middlebrooks Athletic Center.
