Lady Vikings Ousted by Stratford Eaglettes on Senior Night 62-33

MACON, Ga. – Senior Night 2016 didn’t go according to plan for the FPD varsity girls basketball team, as the Lady Vikings (11-9, 4-3 Reg. 7-A) fell to its in-town and long-time rival in the Stratford Academy Eaglettes (17-2, 5-1 Reg. 7-A) 62-33 on Friday night at Coach Mac’s Court at the Middlebrooks Athletic Center.

The loss ends a quick one game winning streak for the Lady Vikings and also ties the season series against the Eaglettes at 1-1 after FPD defeated Stratford 38-32 back on Jan. 5.

“They came out with a lot more intensity than we did,” FPD head coach John Griffin said. “We didn’t have an answer to their pressure on offense and their inside game gave us problems on defense throughout the game.”

The Eaglettes jumped out to a large 26-8 lead at the end o the first quarter due to the play of Stratfords’ Ashlee Francis. The senior netted 13 points in the first frame to aid in the scoring effort.

“We didn’t defend our basket well,” Griffin said. “They found some holes in our defense and moved the ball around us too easy. They just played better than we did and we couldn’t match it.

FPD trailed 32-18 at halftime, but the Eaglettes outscored the Lady Vikings 11-10 in the third quarter.

The Eaglettes closed out the game on a 19-5 run for the win.

“Hats off to Stratford,” Griffin said. “They wanted it more than we did tonight and we didn’t execute in the proper places.”

Francis finished with a game-high 25 points to pace the Eaglettes. Teammates Mary Wilson Avant and Evans McCook each knocked in 12.

The Lady Vikings had just four players score, paced by the 16 of Kate Patterson.

FPD’s offensive troubles were evident. The Lady Vikings finished with just three assists as a team while committing 15 turnovers.

“We’ll can’t keep thinking about this one,” Griffin said. “They got us and we have to move on.”

FPD will move on quickly, traveling to Ellaville, Ga. to take on the Schley County Lady Wildcats on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 2 p.m.

The Lady Vikings defeated the Lady Wildcats 69-28 back on Dec. 18 of this season at the Middlebrooks Athletic Center.
