Lady Vikings Snag 56-33 Region 7-A Road Victory at Mount de Sales

MACON, Ga. – The FPD varsity girls basketball team (13-9, 5-3 Reg. 7-A) pushed its winning streak to two games, defeating the Mount de Sales Lady Cavaliers (3-17, 0-7 Reg. 7-A) 56-33 on Tuesday night at McAuley Hall in GHSA Class-A Private Region play.

The win gives FPD the regular season series sweep over Mount de Sales 2-0 and also keeps the Lady Vikings’ record at 4-0 against the Lady Cavaliers in GHSA play.

“I thought we came out and controlled the tempo of the ball game for the most part,” FPD head coach John Griffin said. “Emma (Lako) got going early and that got everyone else going. It was an all around team win for us.”

Lako did indeed get going, finishing with a game-high 18 points, 11 of which came in the first half. Teammate Kate Patterson also notched double figures in scoring with 14 points.

“We know when those two are playing that well that we become a better basketball team,” Griffin said. “It created open looks for other players like Sydney (Reese), Sadie (Frame) and Bailey (Ruble). And that’s a good thing.

The Lady Vikings led 16-4 at the end of the first quarter an 31-14 at intermission.

After withstanding a 13-8 spurt by the Lady Cavaliers in the third quarter, the Lady Vikings sealed the win in the fourth quarter with a 17-6 run over the final eight minutes.

Patterson paced the team in rebounding with five while Reese totaled an impressive seven assists. Ruble blocked two shots and Frame led the team with five steals.

“We just played solid team basketball tonight,” Griffin said. “And we have to do that as we come down the final stretch run of this season.”

FPD returns to action on Friday, Jan. 29, traveling to in-town rival Tattnall Square Academy for a key GHSA Class-A Region 7-A contest.

The Lady Trojans defeated the Lady Vikings 31-29 back on Jan. 12 in a thriller at the Middlebrooks Athletic Center.

Friday’s opening tip is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Tattnall Square’s Athletic Cener Gymnasium.
