Powell, Weaver Earn Georgia Sportswriters 2nd Team All-State Honors

LOGANVILLE, Ga. – The FPD varsity football team continues to bring in post-season awards, this time from the George Sports Writers Association (GSWA).

Senior kicker Brad Powell and senior punter Daniel Weaver have been selected to the All-State Second Team, announced over the holiday break.

“What an honor for Brad and Daniel,” FPD head football coach Greg Moore said. “Our entire team is proud of both of these seniors and we celebrate the acknowledgment with them.”

In 10 games played, Powell nailed 47 kickoffs for a total of 2,483 yards. His average kickoff was at 52.8 yards. More than half (26) of his kickoffs sailed into the end zone for touchbacks.

In PAT’s, Powell had a strong season as well, hitting 36-of-37 tries. When it came time for field goals, Powell was also a reliable source for the Vikings, knocking in four out of six attempts with his longest coming from 32-yards out.

Weaver, who was named to the AJC All-State First Team as a punter in late December, also joins Powell on the list.

In 11 games, Weaver booted 31 punts for a whopping 1,305 yards. When his toe met leather, he averaged 42.1 yards per punt with his longest of the year sailing 64 yards.

“Both Brad and Daniel worked hard all year long and have set great examples for future players,” Moore said. “Special teams is a very important part of a high school football team and it’s nice to see them rewarded for their efforts. Our entire team and school is really proud of both of them.”
