Third Quarter Slump Dooms Vikings in 64-59 Region Loss at Tattnall

MACON, Ga. – The FPD varsity boys basketball team (13-8, 5-4 Reg. 7-A) dropped its road Region 7 contest on Friday night, falling 64-59 to the Tattnall Square Academy Trojans 64-59 at Tattnall’s Athletic Center Gymnasium.

The win for Tattnall earns the Trojans a season split as FPD protected its home court back on Jan. 12 with a 51-47 victory. The GHSA series still belongs to the Trojans at 3-1 after Friday’s win.

“We came out and played well for three out of four quarters,” FPD head boys coach Michael Walton said. “I thought we did a good job early on matching them bucket for bucket. But that third quarter really got us and they have some players that can create some separation in a ball game and they did just that.”

The Vikings trailed 13-9 at the end of the first quarter but pulled within two at halftime at 31-29.

But the Trojans went on a 17-9 in the third quarter to take a 48-38 lead into the fourth quarter.

“They hit some shots and we didn’t,” Walton said. “We missed some opportunities and turned it over in that quarter where we shouldn’t have. But out guys know that and know what they have to keep doing to get better. I thought we played really hard and the effort was there. We just made too many youthful mistakes in the second half.”

FPD would outscore Tattnall 21-16 in the final quarter, but it was to little too late.

The Trojans had three players in double figures, led by the 20 points of Aubrien Kemp. Jimmy Marshall and Calvin Slaughter netted 18 and 12, respectively.

Henry Middlebrooks paced FPD in the scoring column with 13 points, four coming from 3-pointers. Champ Dawson dropped in 12 in the loss.

“We’ll learn from it and move on,” Walton said. “We have two big games coming up next week and hopefully the Region Tournament. We have to be mentally and physically ready to go.”

The Vikings return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 2, traveling to Wilkinson County High School in Irwintown, Ga. for another Region 7 contest.

The opening tip is set for 7:30 p.m. at The Palace.

The Warriors defeated the Vikings 58-57 on Jan. 15 at the Middlebrooks Athletic Center.
