Vikings Hold off Late Rally from Mount de Sales for 45-39 Region Win

MACON, Ga. – Tied at 33 with just over four minutes to play, the FPD varsity boys basketball team (8-4, 2-1 Reg. 7-A) staved off a pesky Mount de Sales Cavalier squad (7-7, 1-1, Reg. 7-A), going on a 12-6 run to end the game to come away with a key 45-39 region victory.

The win snaps a quick one game slide for the Vikings and gives FPD the GHSA series lead over the Mount de Sales 2-1 dating back to the 2014-15 season.

“It was an ugly ball game for us to be honest with you,” FPD head boys basketball coach Michael Walton said. “We didn’t shoot the ball well at all. But our guys still found a way to win. And that’s what I’m most proud of.”

The Vikings and Cavaliers ended the first quarter at a 9-9 draw, but FPD outscored Mount de Sales 14-10 in the second quarter for a 23-19 lead.

Both teams came out slow to start the second half, as the Vikings barely edged the Cavaliers 8-6 for a 31-25 lead heading to the fourth quarter.

“We didn’t take advantage of some easy opportunities we had, especially underneath the basket,” Walton said. “The good thing is that we are getting those looks, but they are going to have to start going in more often.”

In the fourth quarter, Mount de Sales opened the quarter on an 8-2 run to tie the game on at the 4:35 mark. But the Vikings responded with a 12-6 run to take the win.

Champ Dawson led FPD with 10 points while Armaun Smith totaled nine points.

The Cavaliers were paced by the game-high 11 points of Garrett Thomson. Teammate Bivins chipped in with 10 that included three 3-pointers.

“Mount de Sales has a scrappy team and they pushed us tonight,” Walton said. “But that’s what this whole region does. It doesn’t matter who you’re playing. You have to be ready to play every night.”

Both teams struggled from the free throw line. FPD finished the night at 12-of-22 while Mount de Sales was 9-of-17.

FPD returns to action quickly, hosting the Brookstone School Cougars on Saturday, Jan. 9 at 5:30 p.m.

The Vikings knocked off the Cougars in Columbus, Ga. on Dec. 12 at the Illges Gymnasium 48-45.
