Winning Streak to Four as Lady Vikings Take Season Series Against Brookstone 58-39

MACON, Ga. – The FPD varsity girls basketball team (10-5) knocked off the Brookstone Lady Cougars (6-6) 58-39 on Saturday afternoon in non-region play at the Middlebrooks Athletic Center at Coach Mac’s Court.

The win gives the Lady Vikings the regular season series over Brookstone at 2-0 and gives FPD a 7-3 lead all-time against Lady Cougars. FPD defeated Brookstone earlier this season 50-41 on Dec. 12.

The victory also pushes FPD’s winning streak to four straight, the longest since the 2013-14 season when the Lady Vikings rattled off four consecutive wins against Landmark Christian, GMC Prep, Warren County and Aquinas under former head coach Charley Chase.

“I’m just proud of the girls for their intensity coming off another back-t0-back,” FPD head girls coach John Griffin said. “We keep playing as a team and our defense is leading to a lot of offensive opportunities. We came out and played hard despite playing less than 24 hours ago, and I can’t say enough about their effort.”

The Lady Vikings jumped on Brookstone for a 14-9 lead at the end of the first quarter and outscored the Lady Cougars 19-9 in the second quarter for a 33-18 halftime advantage.

“It was our defense that put us over the hump today,” Griffin said. “We caused them a lot of problems in the back court and capitalized on many of our opportunities once forcing steals and turnovers.”

FPD was paced by the double-double of Kate Patterson, who poured in 21 points and snagged 13 rebounds in the victory. The junior also totaled five steals and had four assists.

Classmate Emma Lako also had an impressive showing, totaling 19 points, 12 of which came in the first half, to go along with six steals.

“Those are our two catalysts,” Griffin said of Patterson and Lako. “They played off of each other very well today and played with a lot of effort and intensity.”

FPD outscored Brookstone 27-21 in the second half to secure the win.

The Lady Cougars were led in scoring by Naeisha McClain’s 16 points. Teammate Browning Lane added nine points as well.

The Lady Vikings took care of the basketball as well, finishing with just nine turnovers in the contest.

“We are playing well right now, but we can’t get comfortable,” Griffin said. “We have some tough games ahead of us that will demand a lot of focus and effort. We’ll have to be ready when those games come.”

That next game is Tuesday night, Jan. 12, as the Lady Viking host the Tattnall Square Academy Lady Trojans in a key Region 7-A contest.

The opening tip is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Middlebrooks Athletic Center.
