Boys Soccer Ends 2016 Viking Cup with 2-0 Shutout Over Savannah Arts

MACON, Ga. – The FPD varsity boys soccer team (2-0-2) ended the 2016 Viking Cup in style, taking third place and defeating the Savannah Arts Academy Panthers 2-0 at the FPD Soccer Complex on Saturday night.

The Vikings finish the cup with a 2-1 record. FPD’s other win came against West Laurens while the Vikings tied Putnam County.

The Vikings struck first for what would prove to be the game-winning goal in the first period by Austin Cox.

Both teams would enter the locker room at intermission with FPD holding a 1-0 advantage.

In the second half, Nicholas Farmer was fouled inside the box and nailed his PK attempt to give the Vikings a commanding 2-0 lead to seal the win.

The Vikings capitalized on their opportunities in the contest, finishing with just seven shots to the Panthers’ 18.

FPD keeper Dontrez Johnson was busy all evening, but the senior picked up the shutout win while snagging 11 saves. Panther goalie Jason Paquette notched four saves in the losing bid.

The Vikings return to the pitch on Wednesday, March 2, traveling to AAAA-Veterans High School in Kathleen, Ga.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
