Boys Soccer Falls in PK’s to Putnam County in Viking Cup Semifinals

MACON, Ga. – For the second straight season, the FPD varsity boys soccer team (1-0-2) fell to the Putnam County Eagles in the semifinal round of the Viking Cup, this time a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation followed by a 4-2 Eagle edge in penalty kicks at Austin Childers Field at George S. Johnson Stadium.

The tie due to tournament seeding sends FPD to the loser’s bracket of the tournament. The Vikings will play the loser of the Savannah Arts v. North Cobb match on Saturday evening.

The Eagles scored the first goal of the contest in the first half from Jesus Sanchez and led for the entire match until the final two minutes.

Forced to hurry, the Vikings tied the game on a goal by Dane Wiggins assisted by Tyler Schultz with less than two minutes to play.

The match would end in a 1-1 draw, forcing penalty kicks.

The Eagles would eventually edge the Vikings in extra kicks 4-2 for the win and a spot in the 2016 Viking Cup Championship Match.

The Eagles out-shot the Vikings 12-6.

FPD keeper Dontrez Johnson picked up nine saves in the draw while Putnam goalie Omar Casterjon-Jaimes had one save.

Kickoff for FPD’s Saturday consolation match is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the FPD Soccer Complex.
