Vikings Finish Regular Season on High Note with 68-55 Win at ELCA

McDONOUGH, Ga. – The FPD varsity boys basketball team (14-9) ended the 2015-16 regular season in style on Friday night, defeating the ELCA Chargers (3-19) 68-55 to snap a two-game losing streak.

The win gives FPD the season series 1-0 over ELCA. The Chargers still lead the overall series 4-3 dating back to 2010.

The Vikings will now get ready for the GHSA Class-A Region-7 Tournament, set for Wednesday, Feb. 10. Opponent, time and location will be determined over the weekend.

“I’m really proud of our guys for finishing out the regular season strong,” FPD head boys coach Michael Walton said. “We had been struggling the past few games, but tonight we wanted this one as a team and took care of business. Our kids played hard and all the credit to them.”

The Vikings jumped out to a 17-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and led 31-27 at intermission.

In the second half, FPD outscored ELCA 15-10 in the third quarter and put up a whopping 21 points in the fourth frame to take the victory.

“We’ve grown up a lot this year and it’s shown late in the season,” Walton said. “We’ve let a few games get away, but overall we have gotten better. And that’s all you can ask for as a coach. It was nice to have Titus (Moore) and Beck (Muse) back tonight as well. Hopefully we can get Mo (Maurice Gordon) back for the Region Tournament next week and keep shooting it better.”

FPD was led by three players in double figures.

Armaun Smith paced all players with 20 points while Henry Middlebrooks and Champ Dawson netted 17 and 13 points, respectively. Dawson also dished out seven assists to go with 10 rebounds for a double-double. Caleb Kelly also added four rebounds in the win.

The Chargers were paced by the 18 points of Kenneth McCullough-Lomax.

“Hopefully this win gives us some momentum going into next week,” Walton said. “From only winning six games last year and improving that by eight this season is a true testament to how hard our guys worked and are still working. And they want to get better.”

“We hope to take that attitude into postseason play,” Walton added.
