Baseball Takes Down Wilkinson County Warriors in Irwinton 9-1

IRWINTON, Ga. – The FPD varsity baseball team (10-4, 3-1 Reg. 7-A) picked up a key Region 7-A victory on Friday night, defeating the Wilkinson County High School Warriors (2-5-1, 0-3 Reg. 7-A) 9-1 on the road.

The win snaps a one game slide for FPD and secures the season series against the Warriors at 2-0.

A scoreless game until the fourth inning, the Vikings struck first in the top half when Will McCormick reached on Warrior error to score Bo Fricks for an early 1-0 lead.

The Warriors answered right back in the bottom of the fourth, though, for their only run of the contest.

Chatman reached on a Viking error that brought home Adside to tie the game at 1-1.

From then on it was all FPD.

The Vikings scored eight unanswered runs and Mac Grice, who finished with a complete game win on the hill, took care of business.

FPD added three runs in the fifth inning, the first coming on a Daniel Weaver double to score Gavin Bloodworth. Weaver would score later in the frame on a Will McCormcik single for a 3-1 lead. The Vikings made it a 4-1 advantage when Kendall Friar reached on another Warrior error to bring home Fricks.

The game would remain 4-1 in favor of the Vikings until the top half of the seventh when the Viking bats came alive to score five more runs.

Jack Sawyer plated two on a single, Garrett West notched a RBI single, and Ryan Jones reached on an error to score West. FPD’s other run of the inning came on a Bloodworth ground out to short stop to score Jones to make it 9-1 FPD.

Grice picked up the win with four strikeouts and two walks on the mound for FPD. Chatman was tacked with the loss for Wilkinson County.

The Warriors committed nine errors on the evening.

FPD will look to take the momentum from Friday’s region win into next week when they host the Tattnall Square Academy Trojans at Ben Harden Memorial Field in the first of two meetings this season on Tuesday, March 22 in Region 7-A action.

First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
