Baseball Wears Down Wilkinson County Warriors in Pitcher’s Duel 2-1

MACON, Ga. – The FPD Vikings and Wilkinson County Warriors squared off in a Region 7-A opener on Tuesday night in a pitcher’s duel, with the Vikings (6-1, 1-0 Reg. 7-A) defeating the Warriors (1-1, 0-1 Reg. 7-A) 2-1 at Ben Harden Memorial Field.

FPD’s Austin Hartley recorded 14 strikeouts in the winning bid allowing just two hits and one run in a complete game effort. Hartley only surrendered one walk as well.

“Austin was huge for us tonight,” FPD head coach Denny Bryant said. “He pitched lights out and really propelled us to this win. Our team celebrates his success tonight.”

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third inning when the Viking drew first blood on a Gavin Blododworth single that brought home Jack Sawyer and Will McCormick.

“(That was)Another big hit by Gavin,” Bryant said. “He’s really getting smarter as a hitter and providing offense when we need it throughout much of our games.”

The game would remain scoreless as Hartley went to work as did Warrior starter Christopher Burney, who struck out 10 but also surrendered 10 free passes.

The Warriors cut the Viking lead in half in the top of the seventh when Yaughn hit a RBI single to third.

With two outs and a runner in scoring position, Hartley induced a ground ball for the games’ final out.

“Things got a little scary there in the seventh, but we were able to pull it out,” Bryant said. “We are glad for the win and just keep trying to get better as this season progresses.”

FPD’s next opportunity to do that will be Thursday, March 3, hosting the Strong Rock Christian School Patriots at Ben Harden Memorial Field in a non-region contest.

First pitch is scheduled for 5:55 p.m.
