Baseball Closes Out Mount de Sales Cavaliers for 4-2 Region Win

MACON, Ga. – The FPD varsity baseball team (11-6, 4-2 Reg. 7-A) returned from its Spring Break Holiday on Monday night in style, snagging a 4-2 Region-7A victory over the Mount de Sales Academy Cavaliers (8-9, 2-3 Reg. 7-A) at Ben Harden Memorial Field.

The win is FPD’s first since March 18 and snaps a two-game losing streak. (FPD’s games scheduled over Spring Break were postponed due to inclement weather.)

“I was happy with the way we came out and played tonight after a long break,” FPD head coach Denny Bryant said. “We had an unfortunate situation with the weather last week, so we couldn’t get out there to play like we needed to. But our guys played well tonight and hung on for the win.”

For the Vikings, it could have been called “the Gavin Bloodworth Show.”

At the plate, Bloodworth finished 2-for-3 with two RBI while teammate Jack Sawyer was 1-for-2 with a RBI.

But it was Bloodworth’s work on the mound that led to the Viking victory. The righty totaled 12 strikeouts in seven innings and surrendered two walks and two earned runs in a complete game effort.

“Gavin was big for us tonight,” Bryant said. “He put us on his shoulders can got the complete game win. Our team fed off of his energy. It was all-around a great team win.”

The Vikings scored three runs in the bottom of the third when Bloodworth doubled home Ryan Jones and Bo Fricks. Sawyer then followed with a single that brought in Bloodworth for a 3-0 lead.

An inning later, the Vikings made it a 4-0 contest when Kendall Friar scored on a passed ball.

The Cavaliers plated their only two runs in the top of fifth when Tres Hattaway singled home Joseph Dufford and Xavier Kind to make it a 4-2 game.

“We got into some trouble in the fifth, but we were able to limit the damage,” Bryant said. “Our guys did a good job not panicking and weathered the small storm.”

Both teams never scored again and the Vikings set down the Cavaliers in order in the seventh to earn the victory.

“I’m proud of our guys tonight,” Bryant said. “It was a close game late and we need to keep playing our best ball at this point in the season.”

FPD returns to action on Wednesday, April 6, hosting Southwest High School at 5:30 p.m. at Ben Harden Memorial Field.

The game is FPD’s Senior Night for the Class of 2016. The ceremony will take place before first pitch.
