Baseball Splits with George Walton, Decisive Game 3 Set for Saturday in Round One of GHSA State Tournament

MONROE, Ga. – The no. 14-seeded FPD varsity baseball team split with the no. 3-seeded George Walton Academy Bulldogs on Friday night, April 29, with the Vikings taking Game One 5-4 in nine innings before dropping Game Two 7-1.

A decisive Game Three will be played Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at George Walton. A coin flip will determine the home team prior to play on Saturday.

Garrett West drove in the winning run to give the Vikings the lead in the ninth inning, as FPD hung on to beat George Walton Academy 5-4 on Friday in Game One of a best-of-three game series.

Jack Sawyer singled to get on base in the ninth. He then went from first to second on a ground-out by Ryan Jones.

Garrett West tossed three innings and allowed no earned runs on one hit en route to earning the win. West faced his trickiest spot in the seventh inning but escaped at 4-4 to force extra innings.

Chrisitan Shiver was charged with the loss, lasting just five innings, walking three, striking out six, while allowing four runs.

The Vikings jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

FPD scored one run in the fifth inning, and then followed it up with one more in the ninth for the game-winner by West. In the fifth, FPD scored on a single by Will McCormick.

It didn’t take long for George Walton Academy to answer as it scored one run of its own in the fifth. George Walton Academy scored on an RBI double by Trey Johnson.

The Vikings fell 7-1 to George Walton Academy Friday despite Kendall Friar’s two-hit day at the dish.

Brooks Barrineau got it done on the mound on the way to a win. He allowed one run over seven innings. He struck out two, walked two and surrendered seven hits.

George Walton Academy was sparked by Chrisitan Shiver and Denzel Coley, who teamed up for four hits and three RBIs.

Austin Hartley was the game’s losing pitcher. He allowed six runs in 4 1/3 innings, walked two and struck out three.

The Vikings managed to score one run in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Will McCormick.

George Walton Academy never trailed after scoring four runs in the fifth on two doubles.
