Boys Golf Takes First of 17 Teams at Stratford Invitational

MACON, Ga. – As if the opening day of Masters Week 2016 couldn’t get any sweeter, it certainly did for the FPD varsity boys golf team.

The Vikings won the Stratford Invitational at Idle Hour Country Club with a team score of 307, tying with Frederica Academy. FPD’s no. 5 player, Chris Adams, outdid Frederica’s no. 5, John McCallum, 81 to 87 to take the victory in the tiebreaker.

“I’m really proud of the guys for the way they played today in some tough conditions,” FPD head coach Charley Chase said. “The temperature was perfect, but you could really tell the course was playing tough, especially on the greens. I’m pleased with how we kept fighting as a team and ultimately came away with a win.”

The Vikings were led by two players at 5-over in Charles Stroud (75) and Wesley Hanson (75).

Wilson Andress fired a 77 (+7) and Jay Spivey signed his scorecard at 80 to pace the Vikings to a 307.

“This was an all-around great tournament,” Chase said. “Coach (Cater) Pierce, Stratford and Idle Hour always run a great tournament and we are grateful to them for the opportunity to play.”

Chase also hopes that FPD’s win will carry into the Area Tournament, set for April 12.

“I hope the guys know that even when we aren’t at our best, we can still play really well when keep our heads up, keep fighting and show a good attitude. I think they know that and we all look forward to seeing them play down the stretch run,” Chase said.

The Vikings return to the links on Wednesday, April 6 at Healy Point Country Club, hosting Mount de Sales Academy at 4 p.m.

The First Presbyterian Day School Department of Athletics strives to build the student athlete both in the playing arena and the classroom while upholding the school’s mission statement to educate and equip students to change the world for God’s glory.
