Boys Tennis Grabs 3-0 Shutout Over Kings Ridge in GHSA State Tournament First Round

MACON, Ga. – It didn’t take long for the FPD varsity boys tennis team (19-1) to advance to the Elite 8 of the 2016 GHSA Class-A Private State Tennis Tournament on Monday afternoon, taking two singles matches and one doubles match en route to a 3-0 win over Kings Ridge.

Playing as the no. 2 seed from Area-1, FPD got two singles match wins from the Michael Durham (6-0, 6-0) and Miller Durham (6-1, 6-0). Halen Fulk/Marshall Danner sent the Vikings into the next round with a 6-0, 6-2 win.

“We told our guys to take every match and every point like it mattered most,” FPD head coach Derek Lashley said. “We did some scouting on Kings Ridge and they come from a very tough Area like us, so we knew they would be prepared.”

But the Vikings were more prepared.

The no. 3 singles match and no. 2 doubles match did not finish as FPD had already clinched the victory.

“I’m pleased with the focus our guys put in today,” Lashley said. “They didn’t waive and knew how important this first round match was. It only gets more difficult from here, so we’ll have to stay sharp.

The Vikings will return to action on or before the April 30 Elite 8 deadline from the GHSA and will play the winner of the Providence (no. 4 Area 2)/Atlanta International (no. 1 Area 3) match.
