Mount de Sales Cavaliers Rally Late to Defeat FPD Vikings 9-8

MACON, Ga. – The FPD varsity baseball team (12-7, 4-3 Reg. 7-A) squandered a two-run lead in the bottom of the seventh as the Mount de Sales Cavaliers (9-10, 3-3 Reg. 7-A) came from behind to defeat the Vikings 9-8 in their last at-bat on Thursday night at Cavalier Fields.

After loading the bases with no outs, the Cavaliers’ Tres Hattaway and Jack Lipson singles tied the game at 8-8 before Josh Tong hit a sacrifice fly to score Adam Leverett to earn the win.

“We just couldn’t get the job done tonight when it mattered most,” FPD head coach Denny Bryant said. “We gave them too many chances late in the game and it ended up costing us in the end.”

The Cavaliers jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning but the Vikings responded in a major way.

FPD plated seven runs in the third inning for a five-run lead.

But the Cavaliers tacked on runs in the fourth through seventh innings to chip away at the deficit and eventually take the win.

Lipson picked up the win for the Cavaliers on the mound, throwing a complete game with four strikeouts and four walks. Austin Hartley was tacked with the loss for the Vikings, allowing four runs, three of which were earned.

“We have to focus better throughout the entire duration of the game,” Bryant said. “We let this one slip away and hats off to Mount de Sales for not giving up and coming back.”

FPD returns to action on Monday, April 11, traveling to Strong Rock Christian in Locust Grove, Ga. for a non-region contest at 5:30 p.m.
